Hazel Dooney is to join the prominent speakers appearing at TEDx Brisbane this Saturday, 15th October, at the State Library of Queensland.

TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design) is a nonprofit organisation devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Founded as a four-day conference in California 25 years ago, TED has grown to support world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The annual TED Conference invites the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes. Their talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. Past TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Created in the spirit of the original TED Conference’s mission, the TEDx program is designed to give communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at a local level. TEDx events such as Brisbane's are fully planned and coordinated independently, on a community-by-community basis but in affiliation with TED.

Tickets to TEDx Brisbane are no longer available. However it will be 'livecast' at http://edgeqld.org.au/webcast – the start time of Hazel's speech has not yet been confirmed but it will be posted on her home page on Friday, 14th October.

Hazel will be telling her own story of creating an independent career, in the hope of inspiring students and artists to exert stronger control over their art and careers. She will also explore the new paradigm within which young artists, musicians and writers are eschewing traditional intermediaries (commercial galleries, record companies and publishers) to create a direct connection with their audience. However it will be – as one might expect of one of Australia's controversial female artists – a frank, intensely personal and, at times, confronting account.

Great opening night for 'Mamas in the Hood'

If you did not get a chance to attend the opening night for 'Mamas in the Hood' then you missed titillation of all the senses. It had a wonderfully welcoming atmosphere and was engaging the audience on varied levels. Anita West gave an insightful presentation about her personal experience of combining motherhood and a successful arts career.

All the works, whilst visually unique seemed to be connected through an underlying sense of movement.

Sandra Landolt's work is playful and her kinetic and video works allowed the audience to connect with the busy-ness and overwhelm that motherhood can encompass.

Candice Herne's collaborative work involved here local artistic community of Montville/Maleny in creating a joyous mobile like installation that invites audience participation and personal reflections on motherhood.

Katrina Stirling's work reflects a personal journey and her connection to nature and family. Using bed sheets and linen that is rusted and stained she imbues her personal thoughts and experiences using images and text.

Chrys Zantis' work is intriguing and sophisticated in its conceptual messages and quite mesmerizing with spinning disco ball bouncing patterns off walls not to mentioned the saucy burlesque performance that had every ones attention as the evening came to an end.

So, if you did not get a chance to attend, there is still time. The exhibition is on until the 5th of November and offer presentations and activities to visitors.

An exhibition of the works of four female artists exploring motherhood, art, politics, contemporary life and society.

Opening night guest speaker: Anita West has built a sustainable art career over 25 years whilst raising a family and understands the extra commitment and dedication needed.
She shares her experiences to pursue creative endeavours amongst the backdrop of caring for children.

About the Artists:
Candice Herne describes herself as a Pop artist who uses advertising materials, technology and everyday mundane objects to highlight the ordinary elements of culture.

Katrina Stirling combines paint, ink, collage and poetry to comment on social environments.

Sandra Landolt is a Kinetic sculptor and Video Artist who makes art that contains moving parts, generally powered by wind, motor or the viewer.

Chrys Zantis creates installations using sculptured knitting and materials.

Erotic Screen and Sound Conference

The IMA are working with their friends at Griffith Centre for Cultural Research on their conference. Erotic Screen and Sound: Culture, Media and Desire will showcase new research on eroticism in the arts, culture, and society, and will feature more than eighty speakers. It will take place at Griffith University, South Bank Campus, 15–18 February.

The keynotes are: Judith Halberstam (University of Southern California), author of Skin Shows and Female Masculinities; Alan McKee (Queensland University of Technology), author of Australian Television and The Public Sphere, and co-author of The Porn Report; and Kelly Dennis (University of Connecticut), author of Art/Porn.

The IMA are also staging two special FREE conference events. All welcome. You don’t have to be registered for the conference to attend.

The Launch

There are a couple of upcoming exhibition openings in Brisbane that look interesting.

First the Brisbane Emerging Art Festival exhibition titled CheckIn, Opening at Metro Arts on Saturday 19th February from 6 - 10pm. The exhibition focuses exclusively on new work and seeks to create a platform to promote the most exciting visual art being made in Brisbane. The exhibition presents artists within a dynamic and critical discourse, with a purpose of creating an arena for the public to view, study and critique new modes of art practice being developed locally.
Each year the exhibition will bring together a new Director, Curator and writer to present the emerging art showcase as part of the Brisbane Emerging Art Festival.

Green with envy. Out of the blue. Caught red-handed. A white lie. Tickled pink. Once in a blue moon. Black out. Paint the town red. To show one’s true colours.

Why do we love certain colours and loathe others? Why do we find some colours soothing and others nauseating? Regardless the reasons, our responses to colour are highly subjective, influenced by in-numerous personal, emotional and cultural associations.

Colouring-in’, with its connotations of child’s play and fun, is also a pun (intended) or a word play suggesting numerous interpretations and approaches to the idea. Throughout out the colouring-in series the concept has been explored through a succession of different subjects: colouring-in (material) (2010), colouring-in (paper) (2009), colouring-in (sculpture) (2008) and colouring-in (the landscape) (2007).

Colouring-in (my world 2.0), the fifth and final chapter in the series, is an investigation by each individual artist into the role of colour in their practice; may it be symbolical, spiritual, expressive or purely ornamental, spontaneously chosen or carefully considered.

Piano for a worthy cause

We have an old upright, dark timber, piano that we really can't fit in any longer. It isn't a wonderful piano - it does play but would need substantial work to make it a functioning thing worthy of someone who cares about music. HOWEVER there are other uses for old pianos - perhaps a rebuilding for a piano cardigan wearer who likes rebuilding things, a garden folly, a school yard distraction, catapult fodder, flaming catapult fodder. An art piece for a group of kids - a how does this thing work?.... what ever.

Spider says it still belts out a good crocodile rock.

Up for grabs for about 2 weeks, before it meets the tuner in the sky.

Jeff Keen’s Delirious Pop-Trash Films

Keen’s films are high-voltage visual shocks, eruptions of pulp imagery, eroticism, violence, language
games, uncensored imagination and sheer giddy exuberance. His early films are love-letters to cinema
history: to silent film and B-movies, to slapstick, thrillers, exploitation flicks and sci-fi apocalypses, his later works disquieting parades of video news imagery and documentation of his own creative processes. Frankenstein and Godzilla share the screen with Keen’s own cast of heroes and villains such Motler the Word Killer, Dr Gaz, Silverhead, Omozap and Mothman (often played by friends and family). Edited into machine-gun sprays of imagery, Keen’s pedal-to-the-metal, high-speed films are like animated collages —action painting with the stress very much on action.—Dan Fox

This month at the Dayboro Art Gallery , Warren Watson and Avril Towerton are the Artists of the Month, why not take a lovely drive out Dayboro way and check out all it has to offer.

Warren, a signwriter by trade, creates wonderful pieces in mixed media.

Avril is currently showing her unique glassware. Avril is also a very talented painter and also has many paintings in the gallery for you to see.

It is one of the country's most generous non-acquisitive art prizes; offering emerging artists with a close connection to Queensland an opportunity to profile their work in the unique environment of Clayton Utz's Brisbane premises. There are 23 shortlisted artists this year with works created in a broad range of media including painting, drawing, photography and sculpture. Haruka Sawa was selected as the $10,000 award recipient, Sonya Peters received a highly commended award and Jason Fitzgerald a special mention. Sophie Munns is conducting this week long event as part of her residency at Brisbane Botanic Gardens at Mt Coot-tha for the year. Homage to the Seed is an 'art meets science' project championing seeds coinciding with the United Nations International Year of Biodiversity.

You are warmly invited to come and spend some time over the 7 days of this event at the Randall Studio at the Brisbane Botanic Gardens at Mt Coo-tha. The studio is easily found as its on the left immediately when you enter the main car park - a small self-contained buidling - in the style of an old school-house.

Yesterday Artworkers together with Southbank Corporation hosted a music exchange day on the new hoarding wall at Southbank near the Conservatorium of Music. The hoarding wall has been designed as an interactive artwork and contains shelves and hooks to place a wide range of materials for people to take and leave as a form of free exchange. Yesterday members of the public exchanged cds and other musical items such as instruments, head phones etc.

B.A.D. Exposed Exhibition got off to a flying start with a full house at its official opening last Friday night. It was a wonderful evening with fantastic art adorning the walls of Percolator Gallery in Paddington. The diversity in the work of our ten exhibiting members meant that there was much to keep our visitors engaged. We had a wonderful turnout of guests coming from all over South-East Queensland to attend Brisbane Artist Development Co-operative's Inaugural Members' Exhibition which was officially opened by the Artwork Alliance director, Kevin Wilson.

Kevin expressed that BAD Co-op fills an obvious need for artists to connect at a grassroots level to not only their peers and organizations like Artworkers but most importantly its audience.

A key aim of 'BAD Exposed' is to provide the community easier access to exhibiting artists at exhibitions and the opportunity to personally engage with artists and learn how, why and what they create.

That is why all our exhibiting artists are on hand throughout the entire exhibition period to discuss the work, answer questions demonstrate process and techniques and even invite audience participation.

It doesn't matter if you attended the opening or missed it, we invite you to come back into the space to enjoy the work or if you are interested in any of the following activities or presentations.

There are no fees, it's FREE to attend so bring yourself and some friends. We would love to share our passion and art with you.

Corinne Colombo's first official Queensland exposure...

INTERNATIONAL artist Corinne Colombo, of Thornlands, will exhibit a range of her original works in the first Brisbane Artist Development (B.A.D.) Cooperative exhibition, to be held at Percolator Gallery, Paddington from June 18 to 27.

Corinne is a Swiss painter who studied painting and printmaking at the Ecole Cantonale des Beaux-Arts in Lausanne.

She has since exhibited extensively throughout Europe and has won numerous awards.

Her pieces are hanging in prestigious locations across Europe, including Bank Amro and Nestle, Vevey.

She has also created original works for real estate agents, department stores, restaurants and churches

She said she joined the B.A.D. Cooperative as her first foray into the Brisbane artists' community and was delighted to find a wealth of professional help from her peers.

"In Switzerland, most of the artists are working for themselves and they wouldn't share professional information," Corinne said.

"The B.A.D. (members) share information and it helps. I think it's a nice idea to be sharing.

"As an artist, I work in my studio alone so it's nice to have the contact.

"It will be the first time I've participated in an exhibition in Queensland so this is a starting place for me."

“B.A.D. Exposed” is the first group exhibition staged by The Brisbane Artist Development Co-operative...

Ten local artists will create a stimulating visual feast exploring the theme ‘exposed’.

All will be revealed as Percolator Gallery in Paddington will be transformed for ten days from the 18 to 27 June 2010, open 7 days, 10am - 6pm.

‘B.A.D. Exposed’ officially opens on Friday 18 June 2010 at 6.30pm with an open invitation to the public.

This exhibition aims to expose the local support network available to artists via The Brisbane Artist Development Co-operative who meet once a month at New Farm and Artworkers Alliance who have recently moved to Paddington.

Members learn first hand that peer encouragement and professional support is a catalyst for growth and development to facilitate closer connections between artists and their local audience.

In a truly collaborative effort, this exhibition aims to expose its audience to a wide range of conceptual ideas including kinetic sculptures by Sandra Landolt to knitted and culinary delights designed to entice and seduce by Chrys Zantis.

The contemplative wrappings by Uta Heidelauf, paintings by Sophie Munns, Deb Peisley and Lorraine Emerson, ceramics and sculptures by Debbie Copnell and Denise Dillon Boland and mixed media works by Corinne Colombo and Rachael Lee complete this sensory journey.

The artists will be on hand to engage visitors throughout the exhibition period while additional interactive events will be held on both weekends and demonstration, educationals and artists talks throughout the show.

Artworkers has embarked on a range of fundraising initiatives being progressively rolled out over the coming months. First up is Transfusion opening Friday 21 May – a week long exhibition and sale of donated works by key Brisbane artists who have donated works valued over $500 to Artworkers. Each and every work will sell for a price of $500 (gst inclusive).

This is a great opportunity to grab a great value work by a key artist. A full list of artists will be available next week.

Following the Erotica prize exhibition we will be having a fun works on paper show with a difference (more later) but suffice to say that we will fill the PS Gallery with a wide range of works valued at $50 each. This show opens on Friday 2 July and runs until 17 July.

We will then have our grand auction on Thursday night 15 July at the Santos building in the city. This will be a massive resale of major works from collections.

Performance Sand artist- Amazing

As described by Ian Johnston in London's Telegraph, Simonova, 24, draws pictures in sand on top of a light table, the images (projected onto a large screen) depicting the effects of the Nazi Invasion.

With a soundtrack of period songs and bombs bursting, Simonova's 8 1/2-minute animated display shows ordinary people suffering the deprivations of war.

A "sand artist," she recently demonstrated her gift on the TV competition "Ukraine's Got Talent," winning the top prize.

It moved the audience to tears, and won Simonova the top prize, approximately $120,000.

A video of her performance has since received more than two million hits on YouTube.

Come check out some of the weird and wonderful things our Catalysts have been up to over the last couple of weeks and find out how you can help them take over The Edge.

There’ll be live music by Catalyst Ian Rogers AKA Ambrose Chapel, a showcase of participants from Musicadium’s recent workshops, as well as the debut performance by Hologram Carver (AKA Catalyst Andrew Gibbs).

Sandra Landolt is presenting a workshop on 'how to make stuff move' at the 'Edge', State Library next Sunday the 28th of February. The Workshop starts at 12pm and goes for two hours. You could drop in anytime between those two hours and it is freeeeee!

Sandra will be presenting her kinetic work and talk about the work process she goes through. People will then make their own little cardboard kinetic creations.

The workshop is also about finding different solutions to make things move with basic material and brainstorming ideas on the concept of 'movement'. It will be fun for anyone who wants to explore, play with ideas and finds enjoyment in making stuff.

Gallery One STUDIO Australian Painters Photographed by R. Ian Lloyd STUDIO is an exhibition that consists of 61 large colour photographic studies of some of Australia’s most respected and significant painters working in their studio environment. The accompanying text, written by John McDonald, reveals how each studio affects and inspires individual creativity. Together R. Ian Lloyd and John McDonald travelled 50,000kms around Australia to meet, interview, photograph and film the artists in their working environments in fascinating detail, whether it be an inner city loft, at kitchen table or the sandy earth of the outback. The complementary book and DVD, Australian Painters on the Nature of Creativity are an extension of the exhibition, which was produced over a 5 year period. Studio runs to February 27. Free entry. KickArts Feature Wall - Lockhart River

KickArts presents New Work from Lockhart River on the Feature Wall. Lockhart River is famous for the energetic group of artists who work at the Lockhart River Art and Culture Centre. The community of about 600 people is bounded by rainforest, low mountain ranges and the sea. The coastline is strung with sandy beaches where creeks and rivers enter the sea through mangrove protected estuaries. People enjoy their traditional lands and retain many aspects of traditional culture. Art works by Elizabeth ‘Queenie’ Giblet, Laurence Omeenyo, Patrick Wasaga Butcher and finalist in the Paddington Art Prize Josiah Omeenyo are being exhibited until 18 February. Other art works by Adrian King, Cheryl Accoom and Irene Namok are available in the KickArts Shop. The paintings are a contemporary response to the environment, culture and traditions of this isolated Aboriginal Community. They express some of the realities of being Aboriginal and the strong influences of traditional culture and values in their world. The artists have developed their own forms of expression which are very different from the art of central Australia and other parts of Australia. The art from Lockhart River promotes the cultural identity of Aboriginal people in contemporary Australian culture.

KickArts will host a Youth Arts Queensland forum on Saturday February 6 to discuss the application process for JUMP, the new national mentoring program for young and emerging artists. If you have the skill, commitment and drive to be one of Australia’s next generation of leading artists, this might be the opportunity for you. JUMP supports excellent young and emerging artists to undertake mentoring relationships with professional artists at the top of their game in their chosen artform. Across a mentorship period of up to ten months, you will benefit from opportunities for one-on-one skills development, structured professional development, funding and showcasing of a new piece of creative work, and plenty of networking with people similarly committed to Australia’s arts industry.

JUMP is for young and emerging Australian artists who are:

• Between 18 and 30 years of age
• In their first five years of professional practice, and
• Practising on one of the artform areas supported by the Australia Council.

As part of the application, you will have to identify a mentor you would like to work with and a project that demonstrates how you would like to develop your artistic practice and take your career forwards. Blunt Edge 2009

The Archibald Prize is an artistic event of some repute and many an aspiring artist may hold hopes of attaining a start in such an event. Portraiture is an artistic favourite. Long considered a standard ‘rite of passage’ amongst artists and audiences alike, Roland Nancarrow and Dominic Johns sought to adapt the ‘Archibald’ to bring portraiture ‘back to its roots’ and the Blunt Edge of Portraiture was born. Now in its 3rd year, the quality of art works in the exhibition were outstanding and the audience was full of praise for all the portraits on display. Over 400 people were in attendance and everyone made it a most memorable experience. Congratulations to Caroline Mudge for taking out THE BLUNT for her great portrait of Simon Poole which epitomised the spirit of THE BLUNT.

Lyndal Hargrave finalist in the Stan + Maureen Duke Gold Coast Art Prize.

The Stan + Maureen Duke Gold Coast Art Prize 09 features works by 61 selected finalists. Bad Coop member, Lyndal Hargrave is one of the finalists this year with her work 'Sacred Geometry II'. This beautifully constructed work made from painted wooden coat hangers has also been acquired by the Gold Coast City Art Gallery for their permanent collection. The exhibition presents a diverse range of art practice, with works by emerging and established practitioners. I was delighted to see Lyndal's artwork was also selected for the cover of the Art Prize catalogue.

Where Food and Fantasy meet....

As I was working late infront of my computer last night I decided to break up the painful routine of backing up my computer and bookkeeping by seeing what was on the magical box...(I rarely watch it these days) when I stumbled onto this bald English guy catching turtle. It turn out that he is one of the UK's Top chefs, Heston Blumenthal. As I love any kind of cooking show I continued to watch and it got stranger and stranger by the minute and also more interesting and intriguing as he was creating a magical and exciting gastronomic adventurer heading back to the past and making the old new again. In this first episode of 5 Heston cooks up some extreme taste sensations from the Victorian era serving up such stables as insects, hallucinogenic jelly and a fictional concoction straight from the pages of Alice in Wonderland.

If you did not see it, do yourself the favour and watch it online. You will be amazed by the creativity and imagination used to create this feast... not to mention the reaction of his guests.

In a diverse career spanning three decades, British environmental sculptor Andy Goldsworthy has become one of the most prominent and iconic artists of our time. In this exclusive lecture, Goldsworthy will discuss his explorations of the effects of time, the relationship between humans and their natural surroundings, and the beauty found in loss and regeneration through photography and sculpture.

ABOUT THE ARTIST....

Andy Goldsworthy was born in Cheshire in 1956 and was brought up in Yorkshire. He studied at Bradford College (1974-75) and Preston Polytechnic (1975-78).

After leaving college Goldsworthy lived in Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cumbria. He moved over the border to Langholm, Dumfriesshire, in 1985 and to Penpont one year later. This gradual drift northwards was due to a way of life over which he did not have complete control. However, contributing factors were opportunities and desires to work in these areas and reasons of economy.

Throughout his career most of Goldsworthy's work has been made in the open air, in places as diverse as the Yorkshire Dales, the Lake District, Grize Fiord in the Northern Territories of Canada, the North Pole, Japan, the Australian outback, St Louis, Missouri and Dumfriesshire. The materials he uses are those to hand in the remote locations he visits: twigs, leaves, stones, snow and ice, reeds and thorns. Most works are ephemeral but demonstrate, in their short life, Goldsworthy's extraordinary sense of play and of place. The works are recorded as photographs. Book publication is an important aspect of Andy Goldsworthy's work: showing all aspects of the production of a given work, each publication is a work of art in its own right.

Some recent sculpture has a more permanent nature, being made in stone and placed in locations far from its point of origin, as for example Herd of Arches 1994. The series of chalk Arches made at Sculpture at Goodwood in 1995 are semi-permanent, given the fragility of the material, and are now sited indoors at Goldsworthy's studio in Dumfriesshire, to extend their life.

‘Calls from the Canopy’ at Mt Coot-tha Botanical Gardens

I went to the Mt Coot-tha Botanical Gardens in Brisbane recently for some timeout under a tree and as I left in the afternoon took a photo of Nicola Moss' mural which she was commissioned to design for the Botanical Gardens earlier this year.

What struck me was the shadows of the trees and the work creating a very interesting and magical connection in the late afternoon.

I felt that it would be an interesting example to illustrate the importance of becoming familiar with a site and taking into account how our work interacts with that site minute by minute and hour by hour as this can have a powerful impact on how the work is interpreted.

(I mentioned it to Nicola and she plans to do a future presentation at a future BAD Meeting about this very process.)

Nicola then kindly shared some of the objectives she included in the design concept for this work titled ‘Calls from the Canopy’

This is some of what Nicola had to say...

The process of designing an image for the Bandstand mosaic began with the building structure itself and the gardens that surround it. As a significant piece in the Rainforest Hide ‘n’ Seek Children’s Trail, the mosaic design was considered in relation to various viewing areas and paths, where the mosaic would be seen from. Strong structural lines in the bandstand, made it important to ensure the completed mosaic appeared as though it was intended to sit on this building."

"I was interested in a design that complemented the surrounding environment of the gardens, creating a connection between elements in the design and the physical surrounding vegetation. With viewing often occurring through foliage of trees, from within the trail and surrounding the bandstand, I envisaged that the layering effect of living plants and mosaic image could add another dimension to the landscape."

"The colour palette for the design was developed with several considerations, one being the existing brown brick of the bandstand and what would complement this. The effect of natural light, with walls of the bandstand falling in shade for periods of the day. Set within a backdrop of dense vegetation; I considered the colour green unsuitable for the mosaic, to some extent it would be lost amongst all the green of natural vegetation."

"Several trees surrounding the bandstand have elements of golden yellow colours; with flowering throughout the year, leaf change during Autumn, and carpets of fallen flowers and leaves on the ground. These observations inspired my choice of Golden amber as the dominant colour within the design, forming a continual unifying layer in the background suggesting trees and leaf canopy. This warm uplifting colour complements the building while connecting with the surrounding environment."

"I hope the design can envelop the viewer, that they can step into a magical place, and sense the movement of ‘Calls from the Canopy’."

Nicola Moss worked in collaboration with Emma Boys as the mosaicist to bring this delightful work to life.

There is an additional panel on the back wall of the bandstand and if you have not been to the Gardens recently, I highly recommend visiting it again. Take your family and children and allow them to explore the magical children's trail which managed to delight my inner child with little unexpected artistic surprises of unusual creatures and creations throughout the gardens.

A new Artist Studio spaces are currently being completed in West End.

With an initial round of studios available mid December 2009 to mid February 2010.
These will consist of group and individual studios with limited furniture to begin with. All rooms have lights, power points and locking doors.

Next round of Studios will be available mid February before the start of semester 1 2010.

"Painted Lady" group show

Pictured: Sandra Landolt's work "Talinga & Wangana"

Seven female artists: Alice Lang, Camille Serisier, Fiona Mail (Kate Woodcroft and Catherine Sagin), Mariam Arcilla, Michelle Xen and Sandra Landolt have come together for a street-side exhibition that explores the precarious balance between nature and technology.

Named after the Painted Lady butterfly, this eclectic exhibition will feature video installations, stop-motion animation, miniature stage installations, kinetic and soft sculpture.
The exhibition will be housed in the Shop Front of the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts on Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley and can be viewed 24 hours a day from the street outside.
Opens Wednesday, November 4 at 5:30pm
to Friday, November 13 at 11:30am

Curated by local Brisbane artist Dhana Merritt, the exhibition has been designed to encourage viewers to linger and enjoy the show as a theatrical spotlight moves from installation to installation.

It was an introductory session that covered a basic history, application of blogs, the different types of blogs, blogging does and don'ts as well as a live demo on how to setup a blog in just a few minutes.

The following videos were selected to stimulate discussion around the place that the www. is taking in our artistic lives. Specifically the interactive aspect of blogging, posting, social & business based online media sites like Facebook, Linked-in, Twitter....and the list goes on.

Whilst Gen Y and Z are in their element having grown up with this technology it seems that many Gen X's but specifically Baby boomers who are serious, established artists or emerging seem to be faced with overwhelm when it comes to including these 'web tools' into their day to day arts practices.

One of the most common concerns seems to be that it takes a huge amount of time to manage and update information and it take artists away from what they love most... creating their art.
(We plan to show you some easy ways to manage this in further posts to come.)

At the end of the day the question remains as to whether the effort justifies the end result. In the scheme of things will the benefit outweighed the effort?

These are all important questions to ask yourself and seek answers to as part of running a professional arts practice and as part of our ongoing to support one another in our artistic community we will be focusing on these areas of interest and attempt to shed a little light on the topic with the hope that it will inspire you to undertake your own investigation and try some of the ideas and suggestion for yourself to see how these can work synergistically for you.

And whilst most of us are aware that the web is here to stay I think that anyone who dismisses it and thinks he/she is too far down the generational pass to be professionally affected by it and therefore does not need to take an active interest in using the tools it has to offer all artists....I encourage you to think again and stay posted for more tips, hints and insights.

Working with nature...

This workshop is designed for anyone who enjoys working with nature. Participants will explore the use of tree branches, sticks, leaves, flowers and other materials to create a sculptural display, wall hanging or installation. Based on the ancient art of Ikebana principles, participants learn basic construction techniques and design principles of composition related to balance, form, lines, space, colours and harmony. No experience necessary.
